Building Blocks Pt.4 is a coupling of two pieces that reflect on an incident that happened many years ago, impacting directly on my mothers childhood, the loss of her father. A sadly common experience at the time.

‘Sangro River’ in Italy is the place where, in 1943, my grandfather was killed and is buried today, leaving his widow and two children behind in London. My grandmother was forced to send my mother to the Royal Soldiers Daughters Boarding School in Hampstead, London; part of the ‘privilege’ that my grandmother could access due to her status as a soldier's widow. I remember my mother telling me of the fear she felt on her first night as a very young girl, sleeping in the dormitory (hence the title of the second piece).

I often reflect on how helpless and confused she must have felt at that moment, with so many life changes in such a short space of time and how one man's sacrifice became the many sacrifices of those he left behind. I have endeavoured within these pieces to create an atmosphere that attempts to mirror the feelings that I can still vicariously access all these years later, through my late mothers stories.
